Welcome to Casa de Vila Verde! Located in the demarcated appellation region of Vinhos Verde in northern Portugal, Casa de Vila Verde is one of the oldest estates in the region.
Our wines are available at most Whole Foods across the Northeast and Midwest, as well as select fine wine shops. HISTORY ![]() The estate has always been and is still today in the hands of the same family, Pinto de Mesquita. The construction date of the family's mannor - Casa de Vila Verde - is unknown, though the 12th or 13th century has been suggested as a likely period due to the existence of a medieval tower. Casa de Vila Verde was already mentioned during the reign of King Manuel I (1469-1521) and is classified by the Portuguese government as a Building of Public Interest, the highest classification for a private building. With an agricultural area of around 100 hectares, Casa de Vila Verde has a long tradition as a Vinho Verde producer, with records of these wines dating back to the 17th century. Today, the new generation runs the estate, currently comprising 70 hectares of vineyards. Its operations are focused on Vinho Verde wine-growing, combining tradition with the most advanced production and winemaking techniques.
REGION
Historically known as the cradle of Portugal, and originally demarcated in 1908, the Vinho Verde Wine Region (D.O.C. – Denominação de Origem Controlada, or Registered Designation of Origin) is located in the northern part of Portugal, bordered by the Minho River to the north and by the Douro River to the south. The region features a mild climate, with predominantly granite soils, thus resulting in wines with a high degree of acidity and low alcohol content, that is, wines from unripe grapes, younger wines; hence, the designation Verdes (green).
